The writer deprecates God's anger, and begs for the return of his favour

«To the chief music-maker on corded instruments, on the Sheminith. A Psalm. Of David.» O Lord, do not be bitter with me in your wrath; do not send punishment on me in the heat of your passion. For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments, upon the eight-stringed lyre. A Psalm by David. Yahweh, don’t rebuke me in your anger, neither discipline me in your wrath.
Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am wasted away: make me well, for even my bones are troubled. Have mercy on me, Yahweh, for I am faint. Yahweh, heal me, for my bones are troubled.
My soul is in bitter trouble; and you, O Lord, how long? My soul is also in great anguish. But you, Yahweh—how long?
Come back, O Lord, make my soul free; O give me salvation because of your mercy. Return, Yahweh. Deliver my soul, and save me for your loving kindness’ sake.
For in death there is no memory of you; in the underworld who will give you praise? For in death there is no memory of you. In Sheol, who shall give you thanks?
The voice of my sorrow is a weariness to me; all the night I make my bed wet with weeping; it is watered by the drops flowing from my eyes. I am weary with my groaning. Every night I flood my bed. I drench my couch with my tears.
My eyes are wasting away with trouble; they are becoming old because of all those who are against me. My eye wastes away because of grief. It grows old because of all my adversaries.

He assures himself of an answer of peace

Go from me, all you workers of evil; for the Lord has given ear to the voice of my weeping. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity, for Yahweh has heard the voice of my weeping.
The Lord has given ear to my request; the Lord has let my prayer come before him. Yahweh has heard my supplication. Yahweh accepts my prayer.
Let all those who are against me be shamed and deeply troubled; let them be turned back and suddenly put to shame. May all my enemies be ashamed and dismayed. They shall turn back, they shall be disgraced suddenly.
